Transportation plans should be left to transportation experts, not to the politicians. If we ever want to get rid of gridlock in large cities like Toronto, the Province must work with the cities to tackle the problem. David Miller’s hastily put together Transit City plan was a disaster and McGuinty’s Metrolinx was no help, they appeared to be nothing more than yes-men going along with Miller. They failed to show any vision for a progressive city and to provide the best solution for every mode of transportation. A smart government would have put their trust in some expert planners and engineers with a great, all around, balanced transportation plan for Toronto instead of a plan put together over a couple of weeks on the back of a napkin by NDP politicians. McGuinty’s vision on Transportation – another disaster McGuinty’s Metrolinx wants to build an underground LRT on Eglinton Avenue which is more expensive to build than a subway and much slower! McGuinty is forever jumping into things without doing his homework to ensure that it is the best solution. One of the reasons there are so many fiascos in McGuinty’s government, is that he doesn’t keep track very well of what his ministries are doing. Frequently I find that his solution was already abandoned elsewhere because better ways were available. And to relieve gridlock, McGuinty could have donated the Province’s land (600 feet wide) in the Gatineau Hydro corridor which runs from the Don Valley Parkway at Don Mills Road out to Scarborough to build a relatively inexpensive highway. Toronto has not built a new road in twenty years and needs some of the Province’s land and permission to build more. Instead, McGuinty connived with David Miller to use that land for a bicycle path that only Glenn De Baeremaeker uses, thus letting all that land go to waste other than to hold up power lines.
McGuinty actually has no interest in fixing transport congestion in Ontario. His vision is a big Metrolinx Big Move mega sized regional public transit system that most people can't use. Loaded with tax- and toll-subsidized high-priced union jobs, Big Move, if fully built would suck up $1BN in annual operating subsidies. Metrolinx is already a colossus of high-priced suits. McGuinty makes a lot of noise about innovation being essential to Ontario's economic future, but he refuses to investigate transport technology ideas that could fix much GTA congestion for a small fraction of the $55BN price tag of Big Move. Nice going Mr. McGuinty. I hope your liberal government gets turfed out of office in October 6. We cannot afford you anymore! Ontario should consider the excellent transportation plans developed over the last twenty years that include all modes of transportation including bicycles by experts of the Toronto Party: www.gettorontomoving.ca. Their transportation plans were developed by expert transportation planners, engineers, and TTC people. It involves everything from subways, to roads, bike trails and new technologies.

Do you see any cyclists on the bike path that was considered to be so necessary for our city?
